Starts Today

Steve Logan will start sorting out some answers on the
field today to some strategic questions facing his East Carolina
football team.
With David Garrard, Leonard
Henry and Pernell Griffin departed on quests to earn spots on
National Football League rosters, the Pirates kick off spring
practice with the task of finding replacements for the All-Star trio
high on the priority list.
Logan and coordinators Doug Martin (offense) and Tim Rose (defense)
will also be paying particular attention to addressing other other lingering
concerns from a 6-6 campaign in 2001 that ended with three straight
defeats, including an excruciating overtime loss to Marshall in the GMAC Bowl.
The drills will run through March 6 and, for Logan, it's
a month-long period he has learned to particularly appreciate over ten
seasons as ECU's head coach.
"It is the best four weeks of the year for me," he said.
"You get to teach without all of the distractions and it`s just being
with the kids."
Sophomore Paul Troth is thought to have the inside track
on succeeding Garrard as the Pirates' starting quarterback but will have
competition from redshirt soph Desmond Robinson and redshirt freshman
Sakeen Wright.
Logan has also indicated that fleet-footed senior
Richard Alston, a multi-talented H-back who rotated at QB with Garrard
as a freshman and sophomore, will factor into the planning at the
position.
Junior Art Brown and sophomore Marvin Townes, each of
whom saw action in the backfield and on special teams last season, are
likely to combine forces to take over Henry's fullback duties.
On the defensive side of the ball, Logan has said that
Rose and staff will implement schematic shifts and conduct an extensive
personnel analysis with the objective of solving some vexing problems
with the pass rush and in the defensive backfield.
Personnel-wise, bruising junior Vonta Leach has a shot
at filling Griffin's inside linebacker position, while a number of
promising redshirt freshmen and sophomores are expected to seriously
contend for prominent roles on the defensive front and in the secondary.
