Former East Carolina athlete and coach Earl Smith, an octogenarian, has been selected for induction into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Smith, 82, who now resides in Fayetteville, was inducted into the ECU Hall of Fame in 1977.

A native of Micro, N.C., Smith played football, basketball and baseball for East Carolina from 1937-39. He was basketball coach of the Pirates from 1959-63 and baseball coach from 1963-72.

Smith's 1963 baseball team was third in the nation in the NAIA ranks. He later took four teams to the NCAA Tournament. He never had a losing season in basketball and had only one losing season in baseball.

After coaching, Smith became a major league baseball scout.
