NORFOLK — A trio of
seniors took control of East Carolina's fate and propelled the Pirates
to an intensely contested 74-67 win over Virginia Tech Saturday night at
Old Dominion's Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Derrick Wiley scored 17
points, Gabriel Mikulas had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Erroyl Bing
added 14 points and muscled down 14 boards for ECU.
Freshman Mike Cook also
contributed 14 points as the Pirates defeated the
Hokies for the second year in a row.
East Carolina (7-1) led nearly the whole game, but never was able to
build a lead of more than nine points. A 34-28 halftime margin
offered little cushion as Tech challenged throughout the second half,
eventually moving ahead 52-49 at the 9:07 mark on a three-point shot by
Bryant Matthews.
ECU regained the advantage
56-54 on a layup by Wiley less than three minutes later, then seized the
momentum permanently with 4:36 remaining when Wiley converted a
four-point play after banking in a spectacular three while being fouled.
Matthews had a game-high 21 points for the Hokies (7-4), while Zabian
Dowdell had 17 and Coleman Collins added 14.
The Pirates return to
action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, hosting Radford at 7 p.m.
