GREENVILLE — East Carolina
rewarded a larger-than-typical Christmas week crowd with a team effort
that had its coach glowing, notching a methodical 77-53 win Tuesday
night over Hampton.
Derrick Wiley scored 15
points on 6 of 12 attempts from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw
line to lead the Pirates. Erroyl Bing added 13 points and Belton Rivers
and Gabriel Mikulas each posted 11. Bing and Mikulas grabbed eight
rebounds apiece.
With students out of
school for the holidays and area malls and shopping centers vying for
attention, the attendance of 4,141 still easily surpassed the crowds for
similar dates in most recent years.
Last season, the Pirates
defeated Campbell on Dec. 21 before a neutral site crowd of 1,631 in
Fayetteville, followed by a sparse 451 who saw Coastal Carolina pull off
an upset on Dec. 23 in their Conway, SC, gym.
In 2002, ECU beat visiting Middle
Tennessee State on Dec. 20 in front of 2,472, while only 1,873 showed up
in Williams Arena two days later for the Pirates' double-overtime win
over Radford.
ECU (6-1) held Hampton
(3-8) to 35 percent shooting from the field and turned 27 Hampton
turnovers into 32 points. Conversely, the Pirates shot 48 percent from
the field and 38.5 percent from 3-point range.
"This is one of the best
games we've played in the five years that I've been coaching here," said
ECU coach Bill Herrion.
Frank Russell was the only Hampton player to score in double figures,
with 17 points.
ECU returns to action on
Saturday in a 7 p.m. neutral court battle against Virginia Tech in
Norfolk. The game will be televised by WITN-TV 7.
The Pirates' next home
game will be Tuesday, Dec. 30, when they host Radford at 7 p.m.
