GREENVILLE — In a positive sign for East Carolina's future, players who figure to return in 2004-05 made a significant contribution in helping a last-year stalwart secure a victory in the final home game for five East Carolina seniors.

Senior Derrick Wiley led the way with 17 points as the Pirates defeated South Florida 69-60 on Saturday, but he got substantial help from freshman Mike Cook with 14 points and junior Moussa Badiane, who compiled 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, and sophomore Belton Rivers, who added 12 points.

The net result was a much-needed win that kept ECU in the thick of the fight for a spot in next month's Conference USA Tournament while stamping a positive memory on the final game in Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena for seniors Wiley, Erroyl Bing, inujry-sidelined Gabriel Mikulas, Luke MacKay and Garth Grindley.

The Pirates (12-12, 4-10 Conference USA) outrebounded the Bulls 47-35.

Bradley Mosley paced USF (7-18, 1-13) with a game-high 20 points. Terrence Leather finished with 13.

Badiane had eight points in the first half as East Carolina led 37-34 at halftime.

South Florida pulled within 39-38 on a Moseley layup early in the second half but the Pirates responded with a 12-2 run. A Belton Rivers layup gave East Carolina a 51-40 lead with 9:49 remaining.

Rivers finished with 12 points.

The Bulls got within seven on a Mosley 3-pointer but couldn't complete the comeback. East Carolina led by as many as 14 in the second half.

Brian Swift added 12 points and seven assists for USF.

ECU will close out its regular season with road games against Marquette (Wed., Mar. 3) and Southern Mississippi (Sat., Mar. 6).
