GREENVILLE — Beast No. 3 of Conference USA's three-headed monster roared through Greenville Wednesday night and met stiff resistance. But as was the case when its other emanations appeared in Williams Arena, the monster prevailed.

Memphis, which entered the game knocking on the door of the Top 25 and tied for the league lead with No. 9 Louisville and No. 13 Cincinnati, ultimately went to its best player, guard Antonio Burks, to overcome aggressive opposition by East Carolina and pull ahead for keeps in the game's latter stages for an anything but easy 79-73 win.

In many ways, it was an encore of the disappointment the Cardinals and Bearcats left in their wake when they whipped through town in January.

Burks took control of the game in the second half and finished with 25 points. Also scoring double-digits for the Tigers (17-4, 8-2, C-USA) were Sean Banks and Anthony Rice with 13 points apiece and Jeremy Hunt with 11.

Banks also grabbed nine rebounds and went 7-for-7 from the foul line for Memphis.

Two players for East Carolina posted double-doubles. Derrick Wiley led the Pirates (9-11, 1-9) with 21 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 10-of-11 from the foul line. Moussa Badiane produced 19 points and 11 rebounds, his second straight double-double.

Belton Rivers came off the bench to score 12 points for the Pirates and Mike Cook added 10.

Next up for ECU is a Saturday game at league foe UAB. Tip-off is 8:30 p.m., with the Pirate Radio 1250 live audio stream on Bonesville.net beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates lost their league opener to the visiting Blazers 71-68 on Jan. 7.
