GREENVILLE — Injury-depleted East Carolina conceded nothing to visiting DePaul Saturday night, giving the Blue Demons a run for their money from start to finish before grudgingly succumbing 70-65.

Drake Diener scored 21 points and Andre Brown had 19 points and eight rebounds to help DePaul overcome a lead ECU — without two of its prominent frontcourt players — had constructed early and held for much of the game.

Diener made 6 of 8 shots from the field, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range. Brown shot 7 of 10 from the field, helping DePaul (11-7, 4-3 Conference USA) shoot 49 percent.

Mike Cook had 17 points and six assists for the Pirates (8-9, 0-7), who led 36-32 at halftime. East Carolina shot 35 percent from the field in the second half and 39 percent for the game.

Erroyl Bing finished with 15 points and Moussa Badiane had nine rebounds and two blocks for the Pirates.

ECU, which lost senior forward Gabriel Mikulas for the season to a broken arm two weeks ago, was also without the services of sophomore forward Corey Rouse, who suffered a concussion in practice earlier this week.

Pirates coach Bill Herrion cited his team's diminished depth as a factor in the outcome but had no complaint about the effort exerted by his players under the adverse circumstances.

"I think our kids played hard," Herrion said. "I don't even think that is an issue. DePaul is a good team."

The Pirates, who began their season 8-1, have lost eight games in a row, while the Blue Demons have won four of their last five. DePaul also has captured all five meetings in the all-time series between the two schools.

Next up for ECU is an opportunity to deep-six its string of 20 consecutive C-USA road losses when it plays at shorthanded South Florida on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  The Bulls, who began the season with only 10 scholarship players, have since lost one player to injury while another has quit the team.
