GREENVILLE (AP) — East Carolina, which little more than a week ago was
thrashing about in the throes of a six-game losing streak, seems to have
rediscovered itself as the calendar inches ever closer towards league play.
The Pirates, with only a game against Lees-McRae standing
between themselves and a January 6 invasion of Williams Arena by Cincinnati
to begin the Conference USA gauntlet, had just enough magic at crunch time
to outlast visiting Radford, 90-86, in a double-overtime Saturday night
thriller.
Travis Holcomb-Faye and Fred Primus scored nine of East
Carolina's 11 points in the second overtime as the Pirates fended off the
final of three late rallies by the Highlanders to gain their third straight
victory.
ECU head coach Bill Herrion, who had been bogged down in a
stressful search for elusive answers as the losses piled up until a win over
USC-Spartanburg the previous Saturday, saw signs in his team's determination
to prevail in the high-drama cliff-hanger that solutions might be falling
into place.
"This was a real good win, a quality win," he said. "We
needed some stops near the end and our veteran players really stepped up. I
like the direction this team is heading."
ECU (5-6) led for most of regulation but Radford (4-9) tied
the game with 2:55 remaining on a basket from behind the arc by Raymond
Arrington.
A dunk by the Highlanders' Andrey Savtchenko with 10.7
seconds remaining sent the game into overtime at 64-64. Savtchenko, a
7-footer, led all scorers with 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting.
Holcomb-Faye and Primus scored all of their points in the
final overtime from the free throw line.
Primus made three free throws in the last 11.1 seconds to
ice the victory after Jason Cornute's 3-pointer had narrowed the Pirate lead
to 87-86 with 55.7 seconds left.
Radford's B.J. Haigler made a spectacular 3-pointer as the
buzzer sounded at the end of the first overtime to tie the score 79-79 and
force another extra period.
Holcomb-Faye dished out 8 assists and led six East Carolina
players in double figures with 17 points, followed by Kenyatta Brown with
15.
ECU forward Erroyl Bing scored in double-figures for the
10th time in 11 games and recorded his 11th career double-double with 14
points and 13 rebounds.
Brandon Hawkins added 13 points for the Pirates while Primus
and Moussa Badiane, who also blocked 6 shots, scored 11 apiece.
East Carolina will not return to action until after the
Christmas holidays when Lees-McRae visits on Wednesday, January 2.
