Spartans Hand ECU Fifth Straight Loss

From AP Wire Reports with Staff Contributions

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Moussa Badiane, who sat out East Carolina's first six games, made a meaningful contribution in his first regular season action, but the Pirates gave an 8-point advantage to UNC-Greensboro at the foul line and came up just short of breaking their losing streak.
ECU hit just 10 of 18 shots from the line for 56 percent, while UNC-G converted 18 of its 22 chances for 82 percent as the Spartans' David Schuck had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead his team past the Pirates 56-54 on Wednesday night.

The win improves the Spartans to 4-1 on the season while ECU, which dropped its fifth straight game after season opening victories over Rutgers and Northwestern, fell to 2-5.

“This is the best we’ve played collectively this season,” UNC-G coach Fran McCaffery said. “I thought we played with great intensity and energy. If we hadn’t, we’d certainly get beat against a team like East Carolina.”

Courtney Eldridge scored 12 for the Spartans, hitting just 3 of 10 shots from the field, but making 6 of 8 free throws.
ECU's Erroyl Bing scored 14 and grabbed 15 rebounds, continuing his season-long string of double-figure scoring efforts.
Jonathan Moore and Badiane, a freshman from France, each scored 10 for the Pirates. Badiane missed all three of his free-throw attempts.

The game marked Badiane's first action after sitting out ECU's first six games while awaiting an NCAA ruling concerning foreign players who participated on club teams in their native countries. His Argentine teammate, sophomore Gabriel Mikulas, is still on the sidelines awaiting a ruling in his case.

Both teams shot poorly from the field — 36 percent for the Pirates and 35 percent for UNC-G. ECU out-rebounded the Spartans 45-28.
