JUMP TO BOX SCORE

GREENVILLE — Turnovers were plentiful and three-point buckets were scarce for first-year Conference USA member East Carolina Wednesday night.

ECU (7-11, 1-5) shot 38 percent for the game, including 2-of-18 from 3-point range, and recorded 21 turnovers as DePaul dominated both ends of the court to cruise to an 80-58 win in the first-ever match-up between the schools.

With the conference loss, their second in a row since a January 16 upset win over Louisville, the Pirates  flubbed a chance to move closer to securing a conference tournament berth at the end of the regular season.

DePaul (8-9, 1-5), which played one of its better games of the season, shot 60 percent from the floor and got 21 points from Andre Brown and 20 from Imari Sawyer.

The victory was the Blue Demons' first conference win of the season, moving them into a 6th-place tie with the Pirates in the league's American Division. Only 12 of the teams in C-USA's two seven-team divisions will gain entry into the tourney.

DePaul shot a season-best 10 of 20 from 3-point range, including a 4-for-4 effort from Sawyer.

Gabriel Mikulas scored 19 points and Kenyatta Brown added 15 to lead East Carolina.

DePaul led by as many as 17 in the first half as the Blue Demons shot 62 percent (18-of-29) and took a 43-28 into halftime.

East Carolina got to within nine points about 6 minutes into the second half but would get no closer. The Blue Demons closed the game on a 10-2 run.

DePaul played the game without head coach Pat Kennedy, who remained in Chicago due to a bad back. Assistant coach Tracy Dildy ran the club in his absence.
