Rouse powers Pirates
past Terriers
Corey Rouse registered his
fourth straight double-double to help East Carolina make its first road
venture of the season a successful one Wednesday night.
The senior from Kinston
scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to propel the Pirates (3-1)
past Wofford 66-62 at Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, SC.
The victory completed a
rapid home-and-home sweep of Wofford (2-4) by ECU, which defeated the
Terriers 70-68 in overtime on Saturday.
Rouse, Conference USA's
leading rebounder in 2004-05, has pulled down 50 rebounds this season —
an average of 12.5 per game — while scoring at a clip of 19.3 per
contest. He leads the team in both categories.
Sam Hinnant scored 15
points and McNeil contributed 10 for ECU, which came from behind in the
second half and held on to keep the Terriers at bay in the closing
minutes.
The Pirates trailed the
44-41 with just under 14 minutes to go before going on a 16-4 run.
Wofford cut the deficit to
57-54 with just over three minutes to go, but Japhet McNeil scored the
next five points to give the Pirates a 62-54 lead with 31 seconds to go.
Drew Gibson led Wofford
with a career-high 13 points, while teammates Tyler Berg and Shane
Nichols each scored 11.
East Carolina's next game
is Saturday, when it faces Old Dominion in Norfolk at 7 p.m.
