ECU fends off Terriers

GREENVILLE — Japhet McNeil
sank two free throws with just over 20 seconds left in overtime to give
East Carolina a 70-68 win over Wofford on Saturday.
East Carolina (2-1) built
a seven-point lead and held the margin with less than one minute to play
in the extra frame, but Wofford (2-3) scored the next seven points,
including a 3-pointer by Eric Marshall, to tie the game with 26 seconds
left.
Marshall had hit a
3-pointer with three seconds left to force the overtime.
Howard Wilkerson and Shane
Nichols led the Terriers with 17 points each.
Tyronne Beale and Corey
Rouse each scored 14 points for the Pirates. Rouse also had 11 rebounds.
Wofford took control of
the game early and led most of the first half, but the Pirates went on a
11-2 run to take a 26-23 halftime lead.
The lead changed hands 19
times during the game and neither team led by more than six points
before overtime.
In a scheduling quirk, the
two teams will meet again Wednesday at 7 p.m., on the Terriers' home
court in Spartanburg, SC.
