ECU tailspin ends at
charity stripe
From staff reports
East Carolina put it on
the line in a 63-59 win over Marshall on Saturday night.
The Pirates snapped a
4-game losing streak as Courtney Captain made all four of his free
throws in the final 14 seconds in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
ECU was 14-for-14 at the
foul line, a school record for most free throws made in a game without a
miss.
Corey Rouse had his 14th
double-double of the season and 25th of his college career as he paced
all scorers with 20 points in addition to grabbing a game high 14
rebounds.
"It's almost over for me,"
said Rouse, a senior from Kinston. "I just do what I can to try to get
our team to win. I just want to go out on a good note and show everybody
that I played hard and did my best."
Captain and Sam Hinnant
each finished with 13 points for ECU (8-16, 2-9 C-USA), which lost 72-66
to the Thundering Herd in Huntington, WV, on Feb. 1.
Rouse, Captain and Hinnant
were the only Pirates to attempt free throws.
"I am pleased with the win
and I am pleased how hard the kids played," said first-year ECU coach
Ricky Stokes. "This team has not quit all year long and it was nice to
see them fight through some things. The kids are still trying, still
competing, still playing hard and anytime we do that, good things
happen."
Joe Miles came off the
bench to lead Marshall with 19 points, while Mark Patton recorded a
double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
ECU closed out the first
half on a 14-0 run to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room. Hinnant
and Jeremy Ingram completed the run by hitting back-to-back threes.
Ingram made another three
to start the second half to give ECU its largest lead of the night,
36-21.
Marshall (10-14, 3-8)
responded with a 20-4 run over the next eight minutes to take the lead,
41-40, on a 3-pointer by Mark Dorris with 11:44 showing. Tre Whitted
then pushed the Herd's lead to four with another 3-pointer.
A follow dunk by Rouse
tied the game at 46 before Hinnant's four-point play put ECU ahead to
stay, 50-46, with 7:12 left.
The Pirates have three
regular season games remaining, starting with a trip to Central Florida
for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday night.
