2nd half fade scuttles Pirates again

By The Associated Press

FORT WORTH — Marcus Shropshire scored 19 points as Texas Christian recovered from a halftime deficit and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-59 win over East Carolina on Saturday.

Nile Murry added 17 points for TCU (14-9, 4-5 Conference USA), which improved to 11-2 at home.

The Horned Frogs trailed by two after a low-scoring first half, 28-26, but scored 45 points on 54 percent shooting in the second half.

Mike Cook led East Carolina (7-15, 2-8) with 12 points and Corey Rouse pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Pirates, who fell to 0-9 on the road, shot just 35 percent from the floor.

The game marked the eighth time this season TCU has held an opponent under 60 points.

Coming off a loss earlier in the week at Memphis, it was ECU's second defeat in a row after putting together back-to-back wins last week, both at home, over Saint Louis and Charlotte.

The loss to the Horned Frogs also marked the second straight game in which the Pirates saw a halftime lead vanish. On Wednesday night, ECU led Memphis 33-28 at intermission only to fall by the wayside in the second half as the Tigers spurted to a 72-55 win.

ECU coach Bill Herrion pointed to the second half deficiencies in postgame remarks aired over the Pirate Sports Radio Network.

"What we have really struggled with is doing things for 40 minutes," he said. "We just haven't been able to sustain it."

Alluding to the team's youth and relative inexperience, Herrion indicated he sees the potential for some positive results over the last six games of the regular season.

"I think this team is close," he said. "I think we've still got games we can win."

East Carolina will have a week to prepare for its next game, which will be at home against Marquette on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
