Pirates hammer Knights

By The Associated Press

GREENVILLE — Corey Rouse had 19 points and 15 rebounds as East Carolina rolled to a 88-40 win over St. Andrew's on Monday, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Moussa Badiane had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Japhet McNeil had 15, and Tom Hammonds scored 14 to help the Pirates (5-7) gain of taste of victory for the first time since a 73-71 win over Toledo more than a month ago.

Taiwon Grooms led St. Andrew's with 13 points.

East Carolina held St. Andrew's to 22.8 percent shooting, a new ECU defensive record, and yielded the fewest points in the 37-year history of Minges Coliseum.

The Knights (5-2) made just five field goals in the second half and finished the game 13-of-57 from the field.

The Pirates opened a 10-point lead in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. East Carolina outscored St. Andrew's 40-10 in the first 15 minutes of the second half and led by 51 late.

ECU's next game is Wednesday at 7 p.m., when the Pirates host South Florida to begin a 16-game gauntlet of Conference USA battles.
