Travis-less Pirates take one on chin

CONWAY, SC — East Carolina's blazing 7-0 start showed
more signs Monday night of subsiding towards a smoldering flicker in the
absence of point guard Travis Holcomb-Faye.
The good news is that only 481 were present to witness the
ambush in Coastal Carolina's petite gym.
Coastal (5-4) stunned the visiting Pirates 90-71,
magnifying the glitches ECU has encountered since Holcomb-Faye, the
team's
only senior starter, was benched December 19 for academic-related
reasons. East Carolina (8-2) has lost two of three games since then.
Torrey Butler tied a season-high with 23 points, and
Tony Darden added a season-high 16 to lead a surprisingly dominating
performance by the Chanticleers.
Butler scored the first ten points of the game for
Coastal to pace a 15-9 run in the first five minutes of a game in which
the Chanticleers never trailed.
ECU was led by Gabriel Mikulas, who scored 21 on 8-of-10
shooting. Belton Rivers finished with 12, while Luke Mackay added ten.
The Pirates cut Coastal's lead to 39-35 at halftime but
the Chanticleers gradually pulled away after the break.
Coastal out-rebounded East Carolina 43-28 and held the Pirates to four
assists.
ECU has a week to regroup for its December 30 Conference
USA opener against Marquette at Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena.
