Pirates 5-0 for first time since '54

From staff and wire reports

Box Score

NORFOLK, VA — The start keeps getting better for East Carolina's basketball team.

Gabriel Mikulas scored 22 points as the Pirates extended their season-opening run to five games by holding off a second half Old Dominion surge to defeat the host Monarchs 75-67.

The game also marked ECU's third straight road win after a lengthy dry stretch in foreign arenas spanning all of last season and a portion of the previous season.

It's the first time East Carolina has jumped out of the gates to a 5-0 start since the 1554-55 season when the Pirates were members of the old North State Conference, a collection of NAIA-affiliated small colleges. That season's squad, coached by Howard Porter, opened 6-0 with wins over Guilford, Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, Erskine, Appalachian State and Presbyterian before finally losing to Elon en route to a 16-8 campaign.

Mikulas's offensive heroics included two key free throws with 16 seconds to play, giving East Carolina a cushion at crunch time after ODU had threatened to erase the Pirates' blistering start.

ECU (5-0) shot 62 percent in the first half and led 45-37 at the break. Th Pirates maintained at least a 6-point lead until the final minutes, when a 6-0 run pulled the Monarchs (1-4) to within 70-67 with 19 seconds left.

After Mikulas nailed the pair of free throws, Derrick Wiley was 3-for-4 from the line in the final nine seconds, helping to keep the Pirates unbeaten.

Wiley added 20 points for East Carolina and Travis Holcomb-Faye scored 11.

The Monarchs got 25 points from Rasheed Wright and 14 from Alex Loughton.

Next on the Pirates' slate is three straight home games, starting with a Monday night visit by Virginia Tech. ECU will host Mount Olive next Saturday and George Mason on Thursday, December 19.
