Pirates hoops keeps the roll going
From Associated Press and staff reports
Box Score
RADFORD, VA — East Carolina College was nestled snugly in the Old
North State Conference — a league comprised of several of North
Carolina's small schools — and Elvis was just beginning to shift his
career into a higher gear the last time the Pirates started out a
basketball season like this.
ECU ran its season-opening string to four straight victories in an
87-42 romp at Radford that was so complete the SID staffs for both
schools went scurrying through the record books.
The Pirates' last 4-0 start was in 1957. Howard Porter was the coach
of that team, which went on to a 15-7 season that ended abruptly with a
first-round loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in the NAIA District Tournament.
East Carolina's fourth-year coach, Bill Herrion, also reached his own
milestone of sorts with the triumph. The best sprint out of the gates by
his previous ECU teams was in his second season in Greenville, when the
Pirates opened with three consecutive wins.
For the Highlanders, it was the biggest margin of defeat on its home
court in school history.
Derrick Wiley and Gabriel Mikulas scored 14 points each to lead an
ECU onslaught which involved liberal playing time for starters and
reserves. Erroyl Bing scored 13 points, Belton Rivers added 12 and
Moussa Badiane tallied 10 for the Pirates.
The Pirates (4-0) scored enough points by halftime to win, using runs
of 11-0 and 14-0 to take a 48-17 lead into the intermission. A 16-0 run
in the second half gave the Pirates as much as a 50-point lead and
Radford (2-3) never got closer than 39 again.
Whit Holcomb-Faye — the brother of ECU point guard Travis
Holcomb-Faye — led Radford with 13 points and Raymond Arrington added
10. Travis Holcomb-Faye had 8 points and 7 assists for the Pirates.
The win was the Pirates' second straight on the road, adding an
emphatic exclamation point to their victory at Middle Tennessee State in
their November 22 season opener, which ended a losing streak on the road
which spanned all of last season and a portion of the previous season.
