Pirates clamp down on William & Mary
From Associated Press, staff and ECU reports
Box Score
GREENVILLE — For 20 minutes Saturday night, East
Carolina showed little sign it had made much progress in ratcheting up
its competitive level since departing the CAA after the 2000-01 season.
Then, a little locker room talk by Coach Bill Herrion shifted the
Pirates into a more intense frame of mind.
CAA member William & Mary got a taste of Conference
USA-caliber defense as ECU bottled up the Tribe in the second half and
pulled away for a 66-51 win at Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena.
"I addressed the players at halftime about their energy
on defense", said Pirate head coach Bill Herrion. "They responded by
holding William & Mary to 18 points in the second half."
Derrick Wiley scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds,
Travis Holcomb-Faye had 12 points and Gabriel Mikulas added 10 points
and 9 rebounds for the Pirates, who improved to 3-0 for the second time
in three years. The Pirates have won six consecutive home games dating
back to last season.
Holcomb-Faye also dealt five assists to become ECU's
all-time career assist leader. The senior point guard's 332 assists
surpasses the former top mark of 330 held by Tony Parham.
The teams were tied at halftime, but East Carolina held the Tribe (0-4)
to 21-percent shooting and 18 points in the second half.
The Pirates scored the first seven points after intermission, taking a
40-33 lead on a bank shot from Wiley with 17:12 to play. The Tribe
pulled to within four before the Pirates answered with a 14-4 run,
taking a 56-42 lead on a 3-pointer from Jonathan Moore with 5:40 left.
The Tribe rallied to 57-51 on a 3-pointer from Thomas Viglianco with
2:12 to play, but the Pirates scored the game's last nine points, going
5-for-6 at the line in the final 67 seconds.
Viglianco and Adam Hess each had 15 points for William & Mary.
ECU now hits the road for a pair of games — at Radford
on Tuesday and at Old Dominion next Saturday — before returning home for
a contest with Virginia Tech on Monday, December 9.
