Chance to change fortunes eludes Pirates

From staff and wire reports

Box Score

NEW ORLEANS — East Carolina's matchup with Tulane looked on paper like a realistic opportunity for the Pirates to break their Conference USA road jinx and cure their shooting maladies.

But, in spite of the Green Wave's meager 1-4 league record entering the game, Brandon Spann had other ideas. The senior guard, a New Orleans native, hit six 3-pointers in a 20-point outing to lead Tulane to a 67-56 victory over ECU on Saturday.

Waitari Marsh added 19 points for the Wave (9-10, 2-4 C-USA), which had a 37-26 lead by halftime. Wayne Tinsely chipped in 15 points, while Brandon Brown grabbed 11 rebounds.

Travis Holcomb-Faye had 10 points and seven assists to lead East Carolina (11-8, 2-6), which continued its recent propensity to fling up bricks. In fact, the Pirates struggled from both the field and the line, connecting on only 37.7 percent of its field goal attempts and 42.9 percent of its free throws.

Erroyl Bing also scored 10 for ECU, while Belton Rivers went against the team's shooting trend, hitting 3-for-4 from 3-point range for nine points.

The Pirates went to the foul line only seven times for three points.

Tulane scored 13 points at the stripe, where the Green Wave shot 76.5 percent.

In an odd statistical twist, Tulane shot better from 3-point range (43.5 percent) than from the field overall (42.3 percent).

The loss was ECU's 12th straight on the road in C-USA, and the Pirates face another road challenge at Memphis on Tuesday before returning to their home court to host Southern Miss next Saturday.
