Green Wave Escapes Saint Louis by Millisecond
CINCINNATI (AP) Tulane survived a furious finish, including a television
replay of a shot at the buzzer, to beat Saint Louis 50-47 in the first round
of the Conference USA tournament Wednesday night.
With Tulane leading 48-44, Chris Braun hit a 3-pointer with
3.6 seconds left to pull Saint Louis within one. But Brandon Spann was
fouled immediately and made both free throws to put Tulane ahead 50-47.
Marque Perry of Saint Louis then made a 3-pointer from the
top of the key that, if counted, would have sent the game into overtime. But
the referee crew checked television replays and confirmed that Perry's shot
came after the
buzzer had sounded.
Braun finished with 13 points for Saint Louis (15-16). Randy
Pulley had 11 and Drew Diener had 10.
Spann had 21 points for Tulane (14-14), which will play
Charlotte in the quarterfinals Thursday night. Linton Johnson added 14
points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Tulane opened up leads of 11-0 and 13-1 while Saint Louis
missed its first 11 field-goal attempts. Pulley came off the bench to spark
a run during which the Billikens limited Tulane to four points over the last
13:56 of the half while opening up a 27-17 halftime lead.
Saint Louis expanded the lead to 32-19 early in the second
half before Johnson capped a 9-0 Tulane run with four consecutive points to
get Tulane back into the game.
