Nix brothers on the mend after transplant

By The Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Former Southern Miss running back Derrick Nix was resting comfortably Saturday, a day after kidney transplant surgery.

Nix's oldest brother, Marcus, who made the kidney donation, could be released from the hospital Sunday or Monday.

Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix, the middle of the three Nix brothers, said Derrick is being closely monitored by medical staff at the University of Alabama-Birmingham hospital.

Derrick Nix had been on dialysis since December. He played last season with a kidney ailment that was being treated with medication.

After playing all but one game and rushing for 1,194 yards last season, tests revealed Nix's condition had worsened and his kidneys were barely functioning.
