Pitino
Spends Night in Hospital By CHRIS DUNCAN
AP Sports Writer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Louisville coach Rick Pitino spent
Thursday night in a hospital undergoing tests for an undisclosed illness.
Pitino, 49, said Friday he felt sick during his team's 77-71
loss to Charlotte on Wednesday night.
The team arrived home about 1:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, and
Pitino checked himself into Jewish Hospital in Louisville later in the day.
``It was nothing minor in my mind. It was something I had to
get checked out right away. I went through probably more testing in the last
36 hours than I have all my life,'' he said.
Pitino said the tests revealed nothing seriously wrong. He
said he would be back on the sidelines Saturday, when the Cardinals are host
to DePaul.
``Everything turned out great. I'm glad it's behind me,'' he
said.
Pitino spoke in a quiet voice at a news conference Friday,
and said he's been bothered by a sore throat recently. He said he had more
serious health concerns than his throat, but wouldn't be more specific.
Pitino's brother-in-law, Billy Minardi, died in the
September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Pitino said his
life outside of basketball is more to blame for his health problems.
``I haven't been the same since Sept. 11,'' he said. ``It's
lack of sleep, it's lack of an awful lot of things, and your health just
doesn't stay up because of it.
``This is just a period so many people have to get through.
I was just coming down with some problems I had to address right away. I
didn't feel comfortable, I had to address them right away. But everything's
proven great. I
can't wait to get going tomorrow.''
