Special radios bring CWS fans closer to home
By ERIC OLSON

OMAHA Hometown announcers
are just $10 away at the College World Series.
For the first time, special
radios are being sold that transmit the play-by-play from the local
announcers of the two teams playing at the time. The NCAA Radio Network and
ESPN television coverage are also available.
The broadcasts are transmitted
through short-wave radio signals set up for the CWS. The signals won't go
much farther than the stadium and its parking lots. In addition to the
play-by-play, the radios will have special programming, features, interviews
and weather reports.
Bart Carlson of Omaha said he
was going to scan the dial checking out all the options to see which one he
preferred. "It's a good idea," he said. At least for the first few minutes
after he bought the radio, Carlson was listening to ESPN.
The radios aren't unique to
the CWS. Similar specialized broadcasts have been available for fans at the
Super Bowl and the U.S. Open.
Can you hear me now?
One of the most audible
changes to Rosenblatt Stadium for the CWS this year is a new $211,000 sound
system. The improvements spread speakers out more evenly around the
23,100-seat facility. It replaces a 10-year-old system that didn't cover new
seats that were recently added.
Bases covered
They're not ads, but careful
observers will spot something foreign on the bases this year. For the first
time, the NCAA College World Series logo is atop first, second and third
bases. There were plans to put an ad for the upcoming Spider-Man 2 movie on
bases in the major leagues, but after negative backlash from fans, the
promotion was dropped. It's not uncommon for logos like the ones in the CWS
to be used on special occasions in the major leagues like Opening Day and
the All-Star game.
Boss Dog a pup
Georgia head coach David Perno,
36, is not only the youngest coach in the eight-team field, he's also the
only one making his first trip to Omaha as a coach. In his third season at
Georgia, Perno was a member of Georgia's 1990 national championship team and
graduated in 1991.
