'Billville', etc.

One of my favorite writers as a kid was Joe Falls of The
Sporting News. Joe is still kicking with the Detroit Free Press and for
years he has written notes columns.
I love notes columns. They are especially appealing for
those of us with short attention spans. So here we go with a smorgasbord of
tidbits from Pirate Land…
• Another open date comes at a good time with the injuries
piling up. Doug White, Travis Heath, John Williamson, Ike Imodi, Corey
Schmidt and Charles Dempsey are among those listed as the walking wounded…
• Todd Berry is a good guy and we pull for the Army coach
and former Pirate assistant. He’s now 4-23 in his third year. West Point is
a tough nut…
• Amanda Ross from WITN Television filed an outstanding
feature on the Steve Logan Television Show on Pirate football players
visiting a detention center for troubled youths in Greenville. Hosea James,
Ja’Waren Blair, Corey Schmidt, Joe Parsons and Vonta Leach all visited.
Those guys did a great job and related their personal experiences to the
teenagers. James talked about a friend who was murdered, Schmidt about his
brother who’s been in jail, Parsons about his own challenges and Blair about
how sports kept him focused…
• It was a great weekend to be a Pirate last week. A 59-24
victory over Army and the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Pirate
Club in the new Murphy Center. Three hundred fifty people were on hand for
the event…
• Another big crowd attended the Beaufort County Pirate Club
meeting at Frank’s Pizza in Washington Tuesday night. Basketball coach Bill
Herrion brought some Pirate players with him to mingle with Pirate fans.
WITN was there for a live sportscast…
• Rick Dayton, who’s been handling our basketball
play-by-play duties on the Pirate Sports Radio Network when I move over to
television, is relocating to Huntington, WV to become a news anchor on WOWK
Channel 13, the ABC affiliate. We wish Rick all the best…
• It must be in the water. Two members of the Pirate Network
are expecting. Carlester Crumpler and wife Danita are excited about the
birth of their first child as are engineer/producer Paul Rogers and his wife
Melanie…
• Former Pirate Travis Darden is entering training to become
a Secret Service Agent. Another former Pirate, Brian Johnson, is doing
social work in Washington, DC…
• The Athletics Department, Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s
Home Improvements are collaborating to build a home in Greenville. We
attended a wall raising ceremony last week that you’ll see on Coach Logan’s
Television Show this weekend. What a neat project to be associated with…
• Pirate baseball had its own “World Series” last weekend.
Randy Mazey’s team played a three game series last Friday, Saturday and
Sunday…
• Former Head Coach Keith LeClair will be inducted into the
Western Carolina University Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend. Keith
intends to make the trip in a specially equipped van to Cullowhee. LeClair
will go into the ECU Hall of Fame next weekend…
• I enjoy getting out and talking to civic clubs as often as
possible. Thanks to the folks at the Rocky Mount Kiwanis for the invitation
this past Monday…
• We’ll have our normal lineup of programs this week despite
it being an open date. From the Booth will air Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
on WCZI, and Logan’s television and radio shows will air at the same times
on Sunday… (Editor's note: Audio archives of From the
Booth with Jeff Charles and The Steve Logan Radio Call-In Show are available
each week in Windows Media format on Bonesville.net.)
• Basketball season tickets will reach an all time high this
year. Expect student demand to be especially strong. We could see our first
“Billville” with students camping out for tickets before big games. Much
like the scene at Duke…
Till next time… ”Keep painting’em purple.”
