Preseason itinerary brings new
wrinkles

Each year, the sports information department at East
Carolina sends out its list of “important dates for Pirate football.”
Somehow, I lost my list this year. I had a nightmare Sunday
night that the Pirates were already practicing and I was sound asleep,
missing this first big day of the football season.
I certainly don’t want to miss John Thompson’s first
official summer practice as the head coach at East Carolina.
There is a change this year where the freshman won’t
practice before the varsity. So the entire team will report on Wednesday.
The freshman will come in a little early that day and the
group will report to the Murphy Center at 1:00 for their orientation.
The entire varsity will report at 3pm at an off campus
hotel. This is a big change from past years. The squad is scheduled to stay
off campus until the start of school later this month.
The idea is to give the players a true, camp-like
experience. Going off campus will take away some of the distractions.
Also on Wednesday, the entire team and all of the player’s
families will have a dinner at 5:30. It’s John Thompson’s way of kicking off
the summer schedule. Even the media is invited, though I don’t know if we’ll
get to stay for dinner.
The first official day of practice is set for Thursday
morning.
You get the feeling that John Thompson can’t wait to get
started.
Primetime Programming
My radio program, The Brian Bailey Show, will move to
8pm-9pm this year, at least for football season.
Coach Thompson is using Mondays as practice days, so his
assistant coaches won’t be available until later on in the evening.
I’ve been very lucky to get the assistant coaches to visit
with me each season to talk Pirate football. I started the show way back
with Coach Art Baker in the 80’s.
Coach Thompson seemed to be genuinely excited about the
show, and told me he’d help out in any way possible.
My show will air on The Talk FM, 98.3 WCZI and simulcast on
Cable 7 TV in Greenville. We will also be available again this year on the
Internet.
