Spring drill: Recruiting,
banquets, depth charts

John Thompson enjoys golf.
His responsibilities as football coach at East Carolina probably keep him
from playing as much as he might like but with spring practice complete,
“JT” was able to slip away earlier this week for some quality time in a
quality place, Augusta National.
The Pirates coach was at the site of The Masters during practice rounds on
Monday and Tuesday.
“Awesome,” said Thompson after nourishing his golfer’s soul at one of the
game’s best maintained venues. “I’m a better man for having been there.”
Now that he’s back to work, Thompson has two priorities — recruiting and
speaking to Pirate Club chapters.
“I want to get to know the high school coaches in North Carolina better,”
Thompson said. “When we have a Pirate Club meeting at night, I’m planning to
be out meeting high school coaches in that area during the day.”
ECU’s February signing class had just four in-state players and 16 with
Florida roots.
ECU men’s basketball coach Bill Herrion will be appearing at Pirate Club
meetings next week in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and Richmond, Va., on
Thursday. Thompson will join the men’s hoops coach at King’s Restaurant in
Kinston on Monday, April 19.
The Pirate Club caravan moves to the Jacksonville (N.C.) Country Club on
Tuesday, April 20, and a busy week continues on Wednesday, April 21 with a
gathering at Nikola’s Restaurant at the Bridgeport Hotel in New Bern. Nash
Community College in Rocky Mount will host a meeting on Thursday, April 22.
Pirates will convene at the Sheraton Imperial in Durham on April 27, at the
Airport Marriott in Greensboro on April 28 and at the Shriners Oasis Temple
in Charlotte on April 29. Meetings continue at various locations in May.
Contact the Pirate Club for more information on upcoming functions at (252)
328-4540.
