FOOTBALL RECRUITING |
Vines snatched up hometown
offer |
When you’re playing alongside a
major college recruit and one of the
most productive high school
receivers in the state you can be
easily overshadowed. But that
situation only served as motivation
for Mydreon Vines last season at
Greenville’s Rose High School.

ECU icon Robert
Morgan passes |
Robert Morgan confided in a
2007 interview that he went to East Carolina because his family couldn't
afford for him to go to nearby Campbell.
Morgan, who succumbed Saturday at age 90
after a lengthy career in political service
and private law practice, was one of six
children who grew up in house that didn't
have running water or electricity. ...

Flashback: The Battle
for ECU |
(From

Football coaches sometimes say,
“It’s not the size of the dog in
the fight, but the size of the
fight in the dog,” when
describing the value of heart
and perseverance in adverse
circumstances.
“I was always too small to play
any ball,” said former United
States Senator Robert Morgan,
who graduated from East Carolina
when it was a vastly different
center of higher learning. ...

Flashback: Don't take
the chip lightly |
(From

Did
you ever wonder about the
genuine origin of that
collective chip on the shoulder
that is associated with East
Carolina partisans?
Even among those of us who
matriculated at ECU in the
'sixties and 'seventies, there
are many who misguidedly think
of the chip's history in
relation to athletics. ...

NEWPORT, RI — The American Athletic Conference doesn't
neglect having fun when it gathers for its annual football media days.
There was a golf outing at Wanumetonomy Golf and Country
Club in nearby Middletown on Monday afternoon and that was followed by
the annual clambake on Goat Island overlooking Narragansett Bay.
Today, AAC coaches and players will be available to talk
about the upcoming season.
East Carolina is represented by first-year coach Scottie
Montgomery as well as cornerback DeShaun Amos and wide receiver Zay
Jones, who was known his first three years with the Pirates as Isaiah
Jones.

AAC commissioner Mike Aresco will lead off today with
remarks at the Hyatt Regency Newport. Aresco probably has been asked as
much about the Big 12 Conference in recent days as his own league with
expansion talk regarding a number of AAC teams, including ECU, possibly
joining the Irving,TX-based Power Five loop.
The possible exit of several teams promised to be the
elephant in the room today until a report that Big 12 television
partners Fox and ESPN might not be on board with expansion. The two
networks apparently don't agree that expansion would add value to their
contract with the Big 12 and might not be inclined to add proportionate
revenue if new teams are brought in.
If TV is hesitant on expansion, that could definitely
slow or stop the process of dominoes that appeared to be lining up.

The weather is not as hot as in ECU's home region. The
high Monday was 79.
Montgomery will open preseason practice on Thursday at
4:15 p.m. Amos said the Pirates had a productive offseason and are ready
to begin preparations for a season that begins Sept. 3 at home against
Western Carolina at 6 p.m.
