CHARLESTON, SC — East Carolina
outscored host College of Charleston 52-40 in the second half but it was
too little, too late, in a 77-73 loss to the Cougars on Monday night.
ECU trailed by 18 points early in the
second half but pulled within 71-69 on a 3-pointer by B.J. Tyson with
1:05 to go.
"We ended up having to play small and
that was our best offense," said Pirates coach Jeff Lebo.
Kentrell Barkley, a 6-foot, 5-inch
freshman, had 22 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals and one
block for ECU (5-4), which had a three-game winning streak stopped.
Canyon Barry, a son of NBA Hall of
Famer Rick Barry, led the Cougars (6-2) with 27 points, including 13 of
14 at the free throw line.
Barry shoots underhanded from the
line as his dad did.
Foul shots were a determining factor
as College of Charleston made 22 of 29 while the Pirates dropped just 10
of 22.
ECU fell behind 12-1 at the outset
before rallying within 21-17. The Cougars spurted again to lead 37-21 at
the half.
Tyson had 17 points and eight
rebounds. Caleb White had 12 points.
Kanu Aja had nine points and eight
rebounds in 21 minutes as the Pirates played without frontcourt
performers Michel Nzege and Deng Riak due to injuries.
Prince Williams had six points and
seven assists for ECU.
The Pirates will resume practice
Thursday after an exam break for a home game at 2 p.m. Sunday against
North Carolina A&T (4-7), which has won its last four.
