CHAPEL HILL — North
Carolina scored five runs on one hit in the sixth inning and defeated
East Carolina 9-1 on Tuesday night.
UNC (31-17) got the benefit
of five walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches in its big frame. Logan
Warmoth had a single in the sixth that scored two runs as the Tar Heels
outhit the Pirates, 12-7.
The hosts scored lone runs
in the first, fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-0 before ECU freshmen
pitchers Denny Brady and Matt Bridges encountered control problems in
the sixth.
Evan Voliva, who took the
loss in
a 17-4 UNC victory in Greenville
on March 15, came on to get ECU out of the disastrous inning.
UNC managed an unearned run
off Zack Mozingo in the eighth.
Brandon Riley and Warmoth
had three hits each for the Heels. Riley had the first inning RBI that
put the hosts ahead to stay.
That was the only run
allowed by Pirates starter Davis Kirkpatrick (0-3) in two innings. He
yielded three hits and walked two.
Eric Tyler and Jeff Nelson
each had doubles for ECU.
The Pirates (30-17-1)
avoided a shutout in the ninth when Garrett Brooks had a one-out single
and later scored on a hit by Ryan Littlefield.
A.J. Bogucki (4-5) got the
win, relieving starter Hunter Williams in the third. Bogucki allowed
three hits over four and one-third innings with three walks and one
strikeout.
ECU is back in action on
Friday at 6:30 p.m. for the start of a three-game American Athletic
Conference series at home against South Florida (21-27).
The Pirates are 11-6-1 in
league play while the Bulls are 6-12.
