Pirates pull away in series opener

MEMPHIS — Parker Lamm had six RBIs and Evan Kruczynski pitched eight solid innings as East Carolina topped Memphis 8-1 in the opener of a three-game American Athletic Conference series on Friday night.

The Tigers (12-22, 3-4 AAC) nicked Kruczynski (5-0) for a run in the second on an RBI single by Corey Chafin but the junior left-hander regrouped to scatter seven hits and fan six without a walk.

Freshman Denny Brady walked two in the ninth before settling in and striking out the next three.

ECU (22-11, 4-3) tied the score in the third as Garrett Brooks led off with a single and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Lamm.

Brooks doubled to left in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Charlie Yorgen.

Turner Brown and Brooks both scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lamm as the Pirates pushed the lead to 4-1 in the seventh.

Brooks had an RBI single that scored Bryce Harman in ECU's four-run eighth. Lamm subsequently had a base-loaded triple for the final margin.

Brooks went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Eric Tyler and Travis Watkins each had two singles as the Pirates outhit their hosts, 14-7.

Jake Little went 3-for-4 for the Tigers.

ECU was errorless on defense.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. today.
