Pirates win wild one in 11th

ELON — East Carolina scored two
runs on a pair of wild pitches in the top of the 11th inning for a 7-5
win at Elon on Tuesday night.
Travis Watkins, Eric Tyler and Bryce
Harman all walked with one out in the final frame to load the bases
before a wild pitch from Joe McGullicuddy (0-2) on a third strike to
Brady Lloyd allowed Watkins to score the go-ahead run.
Another wild pitch enabled Tyler to
come home for a 7-5 Pirates lead.
Joe Ingle (4-2) retired the Phoenix
in order in the bottom of the 11th, striking out the first two batters
before a pop-up to ECU freshman shortstop Turner Brown ended the game
and evened the nonconference season series at 1-1.
Elon (10-18)
won 8-7 in 10 innings on March 2
in Greenville.
Pirate pitchers had 19 strikeouts.
Starter Nick Durazo fanned nine over four and two-thirds innings. Durazo
did not allow a hit while walking two.
Matt Bridges struck out three in a
two-inning middle relief stint. Ingle had seven strikeouts over the last
four innings.
Watkins had an RBI single in the
first that scored Parker Lamm to put the Pirates ahead 1-0.
A solo home run to left center by
Dwanya Williams-Sutton extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth and Charlie
Yorgen had a sacrifice fly later in the inning for a 3-0 advantage.
Williams-Sutton's RBI single in the
sixth that brought in Tyler gave ECU a 4-0 lead. Watkins came home on a
passed ball in the seventh inning after the Phoenix had scored twice in
the sixth.
A 3-run homer by Elon's Nick
Zammarelli tied the score at 5 in the bottom of the eighth.
Brown and Williams-Sutton each had
three hits for the Pirates. Tyler was 2-for-4 as the Pirates (20-9)
outhit their hosts, 12-7.
ECU starts a three-game American
Athletic Conference series at Tulane at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
