GREENVILLE — Eric Tyler set a
school record with eight RBIs as East Carolina took a 13-0 win over
Jacksonville at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.
Jimmy Boyd (3-1) started and pitched
seven innings in the Pirates' second shutout of the season. Chris Holba
came to the mound for the eighth and Denny Brady blanked the Dolphins in
the ninth.
ECU (16-8) took the series two games
to one.
Tyler hit a 3-run homer in the bottom
of the first for all the runs the Pirates would need. He launched a
grand slam in the eighth.
"I was lucky enough to have guys on
ahead of me," Tyler said. "I was just trying to drive the baseball and
be a complete hitter. I was lucky the wind was blowing out."
Tyler broke the ECU record of seven
RBIs in a game which was shared by Jim Riley (vs. Fairfield on March 8,
1987) and Darryl Lawhorn (vs. New York Tech on February 23, 2002).
Tyler's first home run of the day
sailed over the left field fence after a two-out single up the middle by
Travis Watkins and a walk to Zack Mozingo.
"The 3-run homer was huge to get us
going," said ECU coach Cliff Godwin. "Jimmy Boyd was tremendous putting
up zeroes because the bullpen was kind of thin."
Godwin saw the Pirates were ready at
the outset.
"The guys were focused in batting
practice," he said. "They were locked in."
Boyd limited the Dolphins (15-8) to
five hits while walking two and striking out three. Holba yielded one
hit. After the leadoff batter reached base on an error in the ninth,
Brady ended the game with two ground outs and a fly out.
Garrett Brooks hit a two-run homer
for a 5-0 ECU lead in the fourth.
Tyler had a sacrifice fly as the
Pirates added three runs in the fifth.
ECU held a 13-6 lead in hits as
Watkins went 3-for-4 with a double and scored three runs. Dwanya
Williams-Sutton went 2-for-3 with a double. Bryce Harman also doubled.
Dakota Julylia went 2-for-3 to lead
the Dolphins offensively.
Spencer Stockton (3-1), the first of
seven Jacksonville pitchers, went four innings and took the loss.
The Pirates host UNC-Wilmington on
Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Seahawks are 15-6 going into a Colonial
Athletic Association contest with visiting Elon at 1 p.m. today.
