Pirates rally past Duke for 8-6 win

DURHAM — East Carolina scored
two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to rally past Duke
for an 8-6 nonconference win at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday
night.
Zack Mozingo had an RBI single in the
seventh with two strikes and two out to score Kirk Morgan and draw the
Pirates within 6-4. Bryce Harman followed with a two-strike single to
bring home Eric Tyler and cut the Blue Devils' lead to 6-5.
Travis Watkins had a two-run double
in the eighth that scored Parker Lamm and Jeff Nelson for a 7-6 ECU
advantage. Watkins subsequently scored on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler for
the final run of the game.
Freshman Cam Colmore (2-0) got the
win, pitching two and two-thirds innings. He held Duke (10-11) scoreless
and didn't allow a hit. Colmore walked one and struck out one.
Joe Ingle went the final one and
two-thirds innings for his third save. He struck out three without
allowing a hit, run or walk.
The Pirates committed four errors and
the Blue Devils scored three unearned runs.
ECU (14-7) offset its fielding
struggles with a 15-7 lead in hits. Mozingo went 3-for-5 with a double
and an RBI. Morgan was 3-for-5 with a run driven in.
Watkins had two hits with a double
and three RBIs. Harman and Turner Brown each had two hits and an RBI.
Jalen Phillips was 2-for-3 with a
pair of RBIs for the Blue Devils. Cris Perez had two doubles and an RBI
in the loss. Jack Labosky and Jimmy Herron each doubled for Duke.
ECU starts a three-game home series
with Jacksonville on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
