ECU takes series with Monmouth

GREENVILLE — East Carolina
scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 5-2 win over
Monmouth on Saturday, giving the Pirates a series win.
ECU (13-6), ranked No. 17 nationally
by D1 Baseball,
edged the Hawks 4-3 on Friday night.
Parker Lamm was 4-for-4 for the
Pirates on Saturday as ECU collected 13 hits.
The Pirates go for a sweep of the
three-game series at 1 p.m. today. Davis Kirkpatrick will start for ECU
and will be on a pitch count. A sophomore right-hander, Kirkpatrick sat
out the 2015 season after Tommy John surgery.
The son of Donnie Kirkpatrick, former
Pirates assistant football coach, threw 10 pitches Tuesday night in
a 17-4 home loss to No. 6 North Carolina.
Garrett Brooks singled to left field
to lead off for ECU in the eighth and a sacrifice bunt by Turner Brown
moved him to second. Jeff Nelson and Bryce Harman drew walks before Lamm
singled to drive in Brooks with the go-ahead run.
Charlie Yorgen walked on four pitches
to force in Nelson for a 4-2 Pirates lead. ECU went ahead 5-2 on a
sacrifice fly to right by Travis Watkins that brought in Harman. Lamm
was out on a play at the plate to end the inning.
Jimmy Boyd (2-1), today's scheduled
starter, pitched the last two innings Saturday for the win The senior
right-hander put up two scoreless frames while allowing one hit and one
walk. He struck out two after freshman Chris Holba had yielded a pair of
game-tying runs in relief of starter Jacob Wolfe.
The Hawks (6-11) had five hits in
seven innings against Wolfe, who struck out seven and walked two.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the
third after Nelson led off with a single to right. Kirk Morgan followed
with a single through the right side. ECU loaded the bases as the Hawks
had a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Lamm. Yorgen reached on a
fielder's choice to first as Monmouth got Nelson out at home. Eric
Tyler's single through the ride side plated Morgan but Lamm was retired
at home to end the inning.
ECU went ahead 2-0 in the seventh as
Tyler scored Lamm with an infield single. Watkins singled to move Lamm
to third after Lamm had a hit up the middle. Tyler finished with two
hits and two RBIs.
