Rice rallies to take series

HOUSTON —  Rice erased a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the eighth inning to top East Carolina 4-1 on Sunday in the deciding contest of a three-game series.

The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth after a leadoff single by Charlie Yorgen. A balk moved Yorgen to second and he scored on a single by Travis Watkins.

Jimmy Boyd held the Owls scoreless for seven and one-third innings when Rice evened the score on a solo home run to left by Andrew Dunlap.

Joe Ingle (2-2), who took the loss, issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases before ECU brought in left-hander Nick Durazo.

Ford Proctor's three-run triple to left center was the game-winning blow.

Rice improved to 8-7 as the Pirates fell to 11-5 going into a home game at 6:30 Tuesday night against nationally-ranked North Carolina (12-2).

The Owls outhit ECU 6-5 in the final game of the series, which drew 2,474 to Reckling Park.

Dominic DiCaprio went 2-for-3 for Rice.

Ricardo Salinas (1-1) pitched eight innings for the win. He yielded five hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out six.

Jackson Parthasarthy retired the Pirates in order in the ninth for his second save.
