Big inning seals ECU win at Rice

HOUSTON —  Eric Tyler led off the eighth inning with a solo homer to left and East Carolina added five more runs in the frame to win 10-1 at Rice on Friday night.

ECU's Evan Krucyznski (2-0) scattered seven hits in seven innings.

Game two of a three-game set is scheduled for 3 p.m. (ET) today.

Krucyznski allowed one earned run while striking out three and walking one.

Nick Durazo yielded two hits in the eighth with one whiff.

Freshman Matt Bridges gave up one hit in the ninth.

Kirk Morgan went 3-for-5 for the Pirates with three RBIs. Travis Watkins had a double and two RBIs.

Turner Brown and Jeff Nelson each had two hits with an RBI.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Charlie Yorgen scored on a single to center by Morgan.

An infield hit by Nelson brought home Garrett Brooks for a 2-0 ECU lead in the fifth.

A sacrifice fly by Watkins scored Brown and Nelson came home on a wild pitch as the Pirates took a 4-0 lead in the seventh.

Dayne Wunderlich led off with a single for Rice in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch.

A one-out double by Brooks after the home run by Tyler was followed by an RBI single by Brown in ECU's big eighth. Nelson and Parker Lamm drew walks with two out.

Yorgen had an RBI single, Watkins had a run-scoring double and Morgan delivered a two-run single for a 10-1 Pirates lead.

Ryan Chandler had three of Rice's 10 hits as the Owls dipped to 6-7.
