GREENVILLE — Three East
Carolina pitchers combined for a shutout and the bottom of the Pirates
lineup had a productive day as ECU completed a two-game sweep of George
Mason with a 6-0 win on Wednesday.
Freshmen Cam Colmore and Sam Lanier
preceded sophomore Davis Kirkpatrick on the mound. Colmore got his first
win and Kirkpatrick picked up his first save of the season.
Colmore started and went four
innings. He allowed one hit and walked one while striking out four.
Lanier came on for two innings,
yielding two hits while striking out a pair.
Kirkpatrick allowed two hits and
fanned three in his three innings.
The Pirates (10-3) took the lead in
the second after a leadoff double to center by Luke Bolka. A line out to
right field by Bryce Harman allowed Bolka to go to third and he scored
on a ground out to second by Wesley Phillips.
Turner Brown bunted his way aboard to
start the third for ECU. A one-out bunt single by Charlie Yorgen put
Brown at second before a walk to Eric Tyler loaded the bases. A walk to
Harman forced home a run for a 2-0 Pirates lead.
The margin increased as ECU added two
runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
A one-out double by Garrett Brooks
got the Pirates started in the seventh and Brown singled for a 3-0 ECU
advantage. Brown stole second and wound up at third on a throwing error.
Parker Lamm walked before a sacrifice bunt by Yorgen brought Brown home.
Jeff Nelson doubled in the eighth and
Brooks walked. A double steal put runners at second and third. Brown
drew a walk to load the bases before a single through the left side by
Lamm plated two runs.
Nelson, Brooks and Brown, the bottom
three in the Pirates' lineup, accounted for four hits and five runs.
The contest was witnessed by 2,049 at
Clark-LeClair Stadium. George Mason slipped to 2-10.
Next up for ECU is a trip to take on
former Conference USA foe Rice (6-6). That three-game series starts
Friday at 7 p.m. (Eastern time) in Houston.
