Pirates take first game with George Mason

GREENVILLE — Garrett Brooks,
Charlie Yorgen and Luke Bolka each had two hits with an RBI as East
Carolina defeated George Mason 8-1 on Tuesday.
The Pirates are ranked in five polls
this week, including No. 16 by D1Baseball.com. ECU improved to 9-3 while
the Patriots, who took a 1-0 lead in their first turn at the plate,
slipped to 2-9.
The Pirates evened the score in the
bottom of the first on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Bryce Harman that
scored Brooks, who had led off with a single.
Two runs in the second put ECU on top
to stay. Doubles by Bolka and Brooks produced the go-ahead run. Yorgen's
RBI double provided a 3-1 lead.
Wesley Phillips homered to left field
to start the Pirates in the fourth. Jeff Nelson singled and stole his
way to third. Nelson scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.
Kirk Morgan and Bolka had RBI singles
in the fifth for a 7-1 ECU advantage.
Ryan Littlefield tripled in the
eighth for the Pirates and scored on a double play for the final run.
Freshman right-hander Chris Holba
(2-0) made his first start and went three innings for the win. He
allowed two hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out
two.
Sophomore righty Evan Voliva turned
in four solid innings, yielding three hits. Freshman righty Matt Bridges
pitched the last two frames. He gave up one hit and had one strikeout.
ECU outhit the Patriots, 12-6.
The teams meet again at 4 p.m. today
at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
