GREENVILLE — Turner Brown's
two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth lifted East
Carolina to a 2-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on the first day of
the 13th annual Keith LeClair Classic on Friday.
Left-handers Evan Kruczynski of the
Pirates and Kyle Cedotal of the Lions each pitched eight scoreless
innings.
The Lions (5-4) got a leadoff single
from Jameson Fisher in the top of the inning and Carson Crites singled
off ECU reliever Sam Lanier with one out to put runners on the corners.
Nick Durazo came to the mound for the
Pirates but had no play on a bunt by Ryan Byers that broke the scoreless
tie.
Chris Holba came in to get the last
two outs. Crites was caught on an attempted steal of third and Holba
recorded a strikeout to strand Byers at third, sending the Pirates into
their final at-bat with a one-run deficit.
Eric Tyler walked to start the bottom
of the ninth for the ECU (7-2). Brady Lloyd came in to pinch run. Dwanya
Williams-Sutton had an infield hit that put runners at first and second.
Jeff Nelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Lloyd was retired at the plate on a
grounder to short by Kirk Morgan that left the bases loaded.
Brown singled to center to score
Nelson and Williams-Sutton, ending the contest before 2,237 after two
hours and 50 minutes.
Each team managed seven hits. Parker
Lamm was 2-for-3 for ECU. Derrick Mount went 3-for-4 for the Lions.
Cedotal walked four and struck out
four. Both Pirate runs were earned. Kruczynski yielded five hits and was
charged with an earned run while walking two and striking out seven.
ECU plays Tennessee (6-2) at 4:30
p.m. today.
Terps top Tennessee, 10-9
Maryland led Tennessee 8-3 after a
five-run fourth inning and the Terrapins held on for a 10-9 win in the
opening game of the LeClair Classic on Friday. Andrew Bechtold was
3-for-4 with four RBIs for Maryland (4-4). Taylor Stiles pitched three
and two-thirds innings in relief with four strikeouts for the win and
Ryan Selmer got his third save for the Terps, who take on Southeastern
Louisiana at noon today.
