Pirates rally to defeat 2015 champs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — East
Carolina ended a nine-game losing streak to Virginia with an 8-5 win in
10 innings over the defending College World Series champions on Friday.
The Pirates (5-0) pushed across a
tying run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Charlie Yorgen
before scoring three runs in the 10th.
A double by Brady Lloyd brought in
Bryce Harman with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th.
Wesley Phillips followed with a
ground out that allowed Dwanya Williams-Sutton to score from third for a
7-5 ECU lead.
Lloyd scored the final run for the
Pirates on a wild pitch.
Sophomore right-hander Joe Ingle
pitched the last two innings to get the win. Ingle allowed one hit,
walked one and struck out four.
ECU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the
first after Parker Lamm led off the game with a single to center field.
Yorgen reached on a fielder's choice that retired Lamm. Yorgen went to
second on a passed ball.
Walks from Cavs started Connor Jones
to Travis Watkins and Harman preceded a two-out, two-run single to right
field by Williams-Sutton.
Virginia tied the score in the bottom
of the first and took a 4-2 lead in the second.
Yorgen doubled to lead off the third.
Watkins singled before an RBI double by Eric Tyler cut the Cavaliers'
lead to 4-3.
Jeff Nelson's home run down the left
field line tied the score at 4 in the fourth.
Adam Haseley's sacrifice fly gave
Virginia a 5-4 lead in the sixth.
Evan Kruczynski started for the
Pirates and pitched into the fifth. He yielded seven hits and four
earned runs while walking two and striking out five.
Davis Kirkpatrick pitched four
innings. He allowed three hits and one earned run while walking two and
striking out two.
Tyler had two of ECU's 10 hits.
Williams-Sutton had two RBIs.
Matt Thaiss was 3-for-5 for Virginia
(3-2) with three RBIs.
The Pirates improved to 4-0 in
extra-inning games under second-year coach Cliff Godwin.
The three-game series resumes at 1
p.m. today with left-hander Jacob Wolfe scheduled to start for ECU.
Lefty Daniel Lynch is the probable starter for Virginia.
