GREENVILLE — East Carolina
junior left-hander Evan Kruczynski pitched seven scoreless innings as
the Pirates opened the baseball season with an 11-1 nonconference win
over visiting Longwood on Friday.
A crowd of 2,661 at Clark-LeClair
Stadium saw Kruczynski allow just one hit before freshman Sam Lanier and
senior Nick Durazo each tossed an inning of relief. Kruczynski struck
out four and walked one.
The ECU hurlers had plenty of run
support as the Pirates had 15 hits. Turner Brown and Eric Tyler each had
three hits against the Lancers, a Big South Conference program.
Brown, a true freshman, had a home
run and three RBIs.
Garrett Brooks, Bryce Harman and
Parker Lamm each had two hits for ECU.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the
third as Lamm scored on a throwing error and Harman had an RBI single
that brought in Travis Watkins.
Brown had a two-run homer in the
fourth inning. His RBI double in the sixth extended ECU's lead to 5-0.
Tyler had an RBI single in the seventh.
A five-run eighth inning included an
RBI single by Lamm, a two-run double by Watkins and a two-run single by
freshman Dwanya Williams-Sutton.
Nine of ECU's runs came with two out.
The Pirates improved to 44-25 in season openers.
The three-game series with the
Lancers continues with a 2 p.m. start today. ECU is expected to start
junior lefty Jacob Wolfe this afternoon.
