STORRS, CT — Five players
scored in double figures for Connecticut in an 85-67 American Athletic
Conference win over visiting East Carolina on Sunday.
Shonn Miller and N.C. State transfer
Rodney Purvis had 16 points for the Huskies (17-6, 7-3 AAC).
ECU (10-13, 2-8) got a game-high 21
points from senior point guard Prince Williams.
Jalen Adams made seven of eight field
goal attempts in a 14-point effort for UConn, which made 35 of 63 as a
team for 55.5 percent.
Daniel Hamilton and Sterling Gibbs
each tallied 12 points for the Huskies.
Hamilton controlled 16 rebounds as
UConn led 35-30 on the boards. Hamilton also had five assists and three
steals.
ECU did not shoot as well as the
hosts, dropping 23 of 62 field goal attempts for 37.1 percent. The
Pirates partially offset that performance by making 14 of 17 from the
line for 82.4 percent.
Two of ECU's missed free throws came
late in the first half following a technical foul on UConn's Phillip
Nolan.
The Pirates trailed 42-33 at the
break.
A layup by ECU's Clarence Williams
tied the score at 17 with 11:27 left in the first half. UConn went ahead
to stay at 19-17 on a basket in the paint by Adams.
Williams scored with 17:17 remaining
to get the Pirates within 46-41. The Huskies subsequently led by 21
points on two occasions.
B.J. Tyson had 11 points and three
assists for ECU. Kentrell Barkley finished with nine points and three
assists.
Michael Zangari had seven points.
Caleb White and Lance Tejada scored five points each.
Michel Nzege led the Pirates in
rebounding with six.
ECU hosts Tulane (8-16, 1-10) on
Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
