East Carolina football coach Scottie Montgomery is excited about the College Football Playoff championship between Alabama and Clemson tonight.

Montgomery was previously offensive coordinator at Duke. The Blue Devils did not play Clemson during Duke's 8-5 season in 2015.

The Pirates coach still shared his thoughts on tonight's 8:30 p.m. contest in Glendale, AZ, (ESPN).

"Great matchup," Montgomery said. "You're looking at two complete teams. You'll see one of the best defensive fronts in football of course with Alabama. You'll see one of the best defensive fronts in football with Clemson.

"It's going to be an evenly-matched game. ... I like the way both teams are coached, completely different personalities at the head coaching position. It just shows you there's more than one way to skin a cat. I have so much respect for Coach (Nick) Saban (Alabama) and what he's been able to accomplish there, what they do on the defensive side of the ball, bringing Lane (Kiffin, offensive coordinator) in and what they've been able to do offensively, just continue to grow from an offensive standpoint. You wouldn't know that they do as much as they do offensively. They do a good job.

"What Clemson has been able to do at the quarterback position and the receiver positions and the test of time of what Coach (Dabo) Swinney has been able to do since he's taken over at the skill positions and even up front. It's going to be one heck of a matchup. I'm going to refrain from picking a winner because I would have people from both staffs calling me, going off. It is going to be a physical football game. I think it's going to be a little more high-scoring than what some people may think. It'll be a defensive battle in the first quarter. Once both offensive coordinators settle in, they'll put some scores on the board."
