Pirates leave Vegas as winners

LAS VEGAS — East Carolina snapped a
three-game losing streak as B.J. Tyson scored 22 points in a 93-73 win
over Stetson in the Pirates' final game of the Continental Tire Las
Vegas Invitational on Friday.
ECU (3-3) went ahead 3-0 as Caleb
White connected from behind the arc 24 seconds into the game. The
Pirates led the rest of the game. ECU had a 47-34 advantage at halftime
and the margin was as large as 28 points in the second half.
White and Kentrell Barkley had 14
points each for the Pirates.
Clarence Williams added nine points
for ECU and Prince Williams scored eight. Mike Zangari tallied seven
points.
Barkley grabbed eight rebounds and
Zangari snared six as the Pirates had a 39-23 lead on the boards.
Each team had 14 turnovers.
Luke Doyle had 16 points to lead
Stetson (2-4).
ECU made 33 of 61 field goal attempts
(54.1 percent) and dropped 17 of 18 free throws. The Pirates were 10 of
21 on threes for 47.6 percent.
ECU outscored the Hatters 42-24 in
the paint and had a 10-2 advantage in fast break points.
"We really shot it well," said
Pirates coach Jeff Lebo. "A lot different than we did yesterday."
ECU was coming off
a
54-46 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock in its previous
contest at Orleans Arena on Thanksgiving.
"We flowed better," Lebo said. "We
got out in transition. B.J. got off to a terrific start."
Tyson made seven of 10 field goal
attempts, including three of five from long range. He was five of six at
the line. Tyson had five rebounds.
Prince Williams had six assists,
White had five and Tyson had four.
The Pirates host Florida Atlantic
(1-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
