East Carolina
head football coach Scottie Montgomery took the next step in putting
together his first-year staff on Saturday, announcing the hiring of one
of Conference USA's top special teams coordinators.
Shannon
Moore will coach the Pirates' punt, field goal, kickoff, return and
coverage units after serving in that same role at Florida International
the last two years.
Moore
elevated the performance of the Golden Panthers special teams during his
tenure in Miami, achieving league-leading statistics in punt return
average, blocked kicks and fewest blocked kicks allowed.
His 2015
orchestration of the various aspects of FIU's special teams efforts were
reflected in a ranking of No. 14 nationally in overall efficiency.
"Shannon's innovative and
fundamentally-sound approach has translated into success for an area we
consider to be an extremely integral part of our program," Montgomery
said in a news release. "His thoroughness in preparation, game-planning
and coaching all phases of special teams is a contagious quality that is
quite visible in person and in the results he's achieved."
Prior to joining the Golden
Panthers, Moore spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at South
Dakota State.
Moore joins six previously-announced staff hires since Montgomery's
appointment to succeed Ruffin McNeill as head coach of the Pirates:
• Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
Tony Petersen (previously
served in that same capacity at Louisiana Tech)
•
Defensive coordinator
Kenwick Thompson (previously served as
Vanderbilt associate head coach
and linebackers coach)
•
Defensive line coach Deke Adams (previously served in the same role
at South Carolina)
•
Wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan (previously served in the same
role for the Miami Dolphins)
•
Secondary coach Rick Smith (previously served as defensive
coordinator and secondary coach on former ECU coach Ruffin McNeill's
staff)
•
Assistant athletics director for football operations Terrell Smith
(previously served as
director of football operations at Duke)
