Cougars pounce in series opener

HOUSTON — Host Houston defeated East
Carolina 10-1 on Friday night to take first place in the American
Athletic Conference standings.
Ashford Fulmer had a two-run double
for the Cougars in the bottom of the second and Houston (34-16, 12-7 AAC)
led the rest of the way.
Luke Lowery's solo homer in the sixth
accounted for ECU's scoring and cut Houston's lead to 3-1.
Hunter Allen went 3-for-4 for the
Pirates (31-19, 11-8) and Eric Tyler was 2-for-2.
Evan Kruczynski (6-4) started for ECU
and went five and one-third innings. He allowed six hits and five runs,
all earned. He walked four and struck out two.
Andrew Lantrip (8-1) worked eight
innings and scattered eight hits for the Cougars. He walked two and
struck out nine.
Connor Wong had a two-run homer for
Houston in the sixth.
Game two of the three-game set is
scheduled for 5 p.m. (EDT) today. The contest will be televised by the
CBS Sports Network.
