UConn thrashes Pirates

GREENVILLE — Connecticut scored five runs in the first two innings and went on to a 13-2 American Athletic Conference win at East Carolina on Friday night.

The Pirates dropped to 29-18 overall and 9-7 in league play as the Huskies (29-18, 8-8) evened the season series at 2-2.

The teams play again at 4 p.m. today and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Results Friday left five teams tied for first in the AAC. ECU, Houston, Memphis, South Florida and Tulane are all 9-7 in the league with the Huskies one game back in sixth place.

The Pirates were outhit 19-5 and committed four errors to one for the visitors.

Evan Kruczynski (6-3) went three and two-thirds innings for ECU, allowing 10 hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. He walked two and struck out four.

Carson Cross (9-2) pitched eight innings for UConn. He yielded five hits, two earned runs and walked two while striking out nine.

Blake Davey was 4-for-6 at the plate with four RBIs for the Huskies. Willie Yahn went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair.

Kirk Morgan went 2-for-3 and scored one of the Pirates' two runs in the bottom of the second. Charlie Yorgen, Eric Tyler and Travis Watkins had hits. Watkins' single to center in the second scored Tyler and Morgan, cutting UConn's lead to 5-2.

The Huskies scored two runs in the fourth, four in the eighth and added two more in the ninth.
