LYNCHBURG, VA — Liberty pitchers Matt Pennington and Jared Lyons combined to shut out visiting East Carolina 5-0 in a nonconference contest on Wednesday afternoon, ending a six-game winning streak for the Pirates.

The Flames (29-17) had topped ECU 4-3 in the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville on Feb. 22 before the Pirates regrouped with a 9-2 victory over St. John's that evening to win the event.

ECU fell to 3-7 against teams from Virginia this season.

Pirates starter David Lucroy (2-4) hit three batters in the second inning as Liberty took a 2-0 lead.

A hit batter with two out in the fourth led to two more runs for the Flames.

ECU committed two errors with two out in the eighth, enabling Liberty's final run.

Pennington (1-1) scattered five hits in seven innings and walked three while striking out five. Lyons turned in two hitless frames and fanned four without a walk.

Hunter Allen had two of five hits for the Pirates. Luke Lowery had a double. Travis Watkins and Parker Lamm each had hits.

Each team left eight on base.

ECU (29-17) will be back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to host the opener of a three-game American Athletic Conference series with Connecticut.
