ECU tops Camels, 7-5

BUIES CREEK — East Carolina scored three runs in the second inning and led the rest of the way in a 7-5 nonconference win at Campbell on Tuesday night.

A two-out single to right field by Jackson Mims got the Pirates (20-13) started in the second. Hunter Allen followed with a single through the right side. Reid Love singled through the left side to load the bases.

Charlie Yorgen's single drove in two runs and an error allowed Love to come home for a 3-0 ECU lead.

Cole Hallum, who had a grand slam in Campbell's 9-4 win in Greenville on March 10, had a solo homer to left in the bottom of the second to cut the Pirates' lead to 3-1.

"They had a big inning last time and we couldn't get out of it," said Pirates coach Cliff Godwin. "Tonight our guys fought hard. It wasn't easy but we had a bunch of two-out RBIs.

"We played errorless defense."

Bryce Harman singled with one out in ECU's two-run third and Eric Tyler followed with an RBI double down the right field line. Mims had an RBI single with two down for a 5-1 lead.

Seth LaRue had a two-run single to pull the Camels within 5-3 in the bottom of the third.

The Pirates extended the lead to 7-3 with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth.

The hosts were charged with five errors.

Matt Parrish had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth for Campbell (24-9).

The Camels added a run in the bottom of the ninth with two out as Steven Leonard doubled and scored on a hit by Kyle Leady.

Mims and Allen each had three hits for the Pirates. Yorgen and Love had two hits apiece.

"Our pitching wasn't great but we pitched well enough to win," Godwin said.

Jacob Wolfe (2-1) went five innings to pick up the win. He allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out three.

Jimmy Boyd, Joe Ingle and Nick Durazo protected the lead in mound stints before Love pitched the ninth to get his fourth save.

ECU, 3-3 in the American Athletic Conference, returns to league play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the opener of a three-game series at South Florida (22-11-1, 5-1 AAC).

The Bulls absorbed a 13-7 loss at Florida International on Tuesday night.
